My sense is the song has lost its joy. Wheel had an attitude about it of sure we're screwed and can't win but we're having fun till the rides up. Maybe it was just Jerry smiling when he sang it. Probably just me.

Never cared for any version of the song. One of the worst Garcia/Hunter compositions, IMHO. It's weak, both lyrically and melodically.
